Michael Guineys : A Brief History

Michael Guineys opened its doors for business in April 1971 at 93 Talbot Street. It opened for business with an inaugural sale offering outstandingly good value to the public in general drapery lines. Within months, a second shop was opened in Parliament Street, which is where a new area of business was entered into, namely carpets and furniture. Even though this area was not known for shopping, it was an immediate success due to the excellent value for money that was on offer.

October 1973 saw the opening of another store on Thomas Street. This saw a new and innovative idea in the Irish retail trade, as Michael Guineys was the first to introduce new American sheets and towels into Ireland. This delighted many a housewife, as no ironing was necessary!

Menswear and ladieswear were also introduced at this stage, targeting a wider customer base.

In 1977, both Thomas Street and Parliament Street were closed down and number 11-12 North Earl Street was born. Over the next 12 years, a loyal customer base was built up. Customers knew that they would always get discount prices at Michael Guineys and satisfaction guaranteed.

In 1989, Michael Guineys was well positioned for expansion. The Denim Bar opened up selling a range of denims from suppliers such as Lee, Levi's and Wrangler. Then in 1992, Cork opened up for business, the first shop to be opened up outside of Dublin.

About 4 months after the Cork opening, number 83 Talbot Street opened its doors for business, selling hardware.

The next shop to open was Waterford in December 1998, followed by Tralee in February 2004 and Limerick opened up for business in December 2004.
